3D Animation Project
A posting in a while. I have been working on a 3D project for my computer animation class(for quite a long time:/) and we were supposed to build a interior of a place that exist in real life. After a long research I found some appealing photographs of train stations, and decided to go for Barcelona Sants railway station.
This was what I had for my 6th week of class. At the beginning of this project, I was going for the mood in World War 2 era, so I simply put the those awesome armored trains. Every object was pretty much in place and I had some good comments from people, but everyone hated the trains there. The biggest problem was that no one could really tell that those were actually trains, not tanks. I agreed that the these trains does not fit with the environment, in terms of design and mood.
So, I managed to make another type of train, and I liked this one much better than the previous one.
After a few break downs during rendering process (probably the most disastrous part of this whole project:/), I managed to finish the scene, and I am quite happy with how it turned out. It sucks that you hardly see any details on the architectures in the final image when I spent so much time getting them right. Still, my professor wanted my scene to be hung at the student show, so it's good that it payed off all my hard work.

Classic LIterature Project- inclass project
An inclass project for Illuastration Practice Portfolio class. We were supposed to pick a title of a popular american literature, and make an illustration based on that title. I went to the list of best selling fictions and picked this book called Mission Earth. I wanted to do something si-fi and the title sounded vague enough to start with my brainstorming and I eventually ended doing this book cover. This is the version I handed in for the class.

U.S. President project
An in-class project. Tying to do an environment design in a short period time gave me an headache. I just hope I had a little bit more of time since this piece seems to miss a lot of details. I thinking to go back and smoothen out some areas.

Blog Self Evaluation
Prompts:
- Alex Kim
- May 10th 2014
- Science fiction, fantasy, illustrations, concept art
- I mainly use digital media (Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchbookPro)
- I wouldn't call it unique, but I tend to use brushes I designed so, the every piece have same energy to them. - subtle?
- I love the word "wabi sabi". It comes from a Japanese aesthetic which is finding beauty in imperfection. I try to apply this idea whenever I make my own artwork. For example, I put little details on the parts where I think are less important, therefore interrupt my message to the reader, in order to emphasize the dominant in the painting.
- a game studio
- contemporary artists including Feng Zhu, Alexander Zedig Diboine, Sergey Kolesov, Jon foster, Ashley Wood.
Elevator Pitch: I am a concept artist residing in Columbus Ohio, looking forward to participate in game and movie projects.

Copying old masters' paintings
Copying a painting by Lord Frederick Leighton and learning a lot from it. I feel like I should do more of these everyday.

Final project for Design for Media -04
For my final artworks, I have done environment sketches and weapon designs. I am not posting character designs yet, since they are pretty much the same from the last post.
To talk about the setting in brief:
Futuristic steampunk setting where the monarchy government overrules the city, and citizens were not happy about the kings dictatorship. The king and aristocrats' extravagance grows bigger everyday while people in lower class suffers from disease and starvation. A resistance group called The Struggles is formed and tries to overthrow the government.

Final project for Design for Media -02
For last week, I spend most of my time working on the main character designs. Due to lack of time, I was not sure if I wanted to make the characters look as realistic as possible. Also I realized that I am more familiar with cartoonic styles. I think getting reference pictures are good thing to do, but sometimes, I need to stay away from them and draw quickly from the head. That way, it seems like I put more character in to my drawing styles. For right now, there are not much to show yet, but hopefully I can get something done by this week.

Final project for Design for Media -01
Last week, I started doing thumbnail sketches for environment and did some character development. For this project, I chose the time setting to be 18th century for some reasons. First, I was searching for historical interesting events and French Revolution came up. I do not recall there had been any concept art based on that particular event, there fore I thought this could be a good practice to come up with something whole new. As for the second reason, I love the atmosphere from Bioshock series and I am going to try to bring that feel to my design, but I wanted to stay away from copying a lot of visual elements from Bioshock. Right now, I am all over the place doing many things at the same time. I am going tidy up some of these till next week so it looks more presentable.

Final project for Design for Media
It is almost end of the semester and I've started working on my final projects.
In this class, we were to make our project on our own choice. Since I am becoming a senior student next year I felt like it's good time to work on my portfolio pieces. For this project, I am going to develop a concept design of a world I created. I realize that one month is not enough time to develop a solid concept designs but, I look forward spending my time on these even during the summer. I am thinking
I recently played game called 'Bioshock: Infinite' and I loved how much depth they put into the game, by creating posters, ads, and propaganda, which look realistic and seemly from that time period.

Here are some amazing environment designs.

In terms of the layouts, I think am going to refer to games like Dishonored. They have really strong concept art and I like their fine- art like quality
At least, I am trying to get three most basic elements done by May 9th:
chracters
environment
vehicle/weapons
This is my gantt chart and I am going to stick to the schedule.
